Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, & Queer Persons in the Profession Task Force

Charge: This group recommends policies and good practices to assure the full access and academic freedom of LGBTIQ persons within the Academy and develops programs to enhance their status in the profession.

Composition:  Up to five members.

Terms of Office:  Five years.

Upcoming Task Force meetings 

  • Sunday, November 2, 2008, 7:00-8:45 a.m. - Business meeting with representatives from Committee on the Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession.

Events 

Look for the following Task Force sponsored events at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago:

  • A Special Topics Forum on the present and future state of LGBT studies in religion;
  • A mentoring lunch sponsored jointly by the Task Force, the Committee on the Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession, and the Committee on the Status of Women in the Profession; and
  • Listening sessions at The Corner Bakery (224 South Michigan Avenue, on the corner of Adams): Saturday, November 1, from 2:30-4:00 p.m., and Monday, November 3, from 8:00-9:30 a.m.
Also, watch for the sessions sponsored by the three program units that focus on LGBTIQ studies in religion: the Lesbian-Feminist Issues and Religion Group, the Gay Men's Issues in Religion Group, and the Queer Theory and LGBT Studies in Religion Consultation.

Mentoring

The Task Force is interested in developing a mentoring network for LGBTIQ scholars and scholars of LGBTIQ studies. If you are interested in taking part in such a network, please e-mail Melissa Wilcox at wilcoxmm@whitman.edu. In your e-mail, please mention whether you would like to serve as a mentor, have a mentor, or both. Please also describe your area of the field, and anything in particular you are seeking in a mentor/mentee.

Scholars' Directory

The Task Force is interested in developing a directory of LGBTIQ scholars and scholars who work in LGBTIQ studies. The directory will be published online, and it will include both graduate students and those who have graduated (or did so long ago). If you are interested in having your name appear in the directory, please contact Melissa Wilcox at wilcoxmm@whitman.edu.

Job descriptions, calls for papers/proposals, and conference information relevant to LGBTIQ Studies in religion will be posted in this section when they come up.
